Mont Sainte-Victoire Print by Paul Cezanne

Subject
matter: The painting name is: Mont Sainte-Victoire seen from
Bellevue. It was painted in 1885. The art work seems to be a little boring as
the colors are the same, but at the same time that’s what makes it interesting.
This is a painting of some kind of town with mountains in the background. A lot
of his work has something to do with nature like mountains, forests, farm
houses, trees.

Technique: This work was painted with oil paint.
It was painted on a canvas. I think the marks were quite carefully applied as
the colours seem to be chosen and applied perfectly. The paint consistency is
medium and oily as the paint was oil although it’s not too thick not too thin. There
is a lot of depth in the work as we can clearly see that the mountains are in
the back of the whole painting and the trees are in the front, the sizes of
them tells us that the painting itself is not flat. The colours do resemble the
actual object as it’s all about nature and the painting is mainly green and
yellow just different shades of these 2 colours. I think this painting is
unique because of the use of colours. The colours used are cold and worm as
shades of green are cold and shades of yellow, orange are warm. There is a lot of tonal range in the work as
there is a lot of shading and you can see there are dark areas and light areas.
The texture could be rough just because of the canvas however the paint is
smooth, so the only thing that makes it rough is the canvas itself. The
landscape is viewed from eye level although it looks like the painter was in
the plane while he was painting cause it looks from high up but eye level.

Artist’s career: Paul Cezanne is a French painter and was
born in Aix-en-Provence, France in January 19th
1839. He died aged 67 in the same place in France 22nd October 1906.
The movement he was working in was Post-impressionism. He influenced these
artists: Georges Braque, Henri Matisse, Pablo
Picasso and Bohumír Dvorský. Paul Cezanne was influenced by Camille Pissarro, Eugene
Delacroix and Camille Pissarro.
