Agnes Decourchelle

SUBJECT MATTER

Agnes Decourchelle uses colour pencils to show different shadings in the
drawing. The mood that the picture gives is quite positive as the image is
colourful It does not give negative thoughts. The subject matter of this is the
use of colour and the different colours used to contrast.

TECHNIQUE
This artwork
is coloured with pencils. The pencils used were colour pencils and some of the
strokes on the art work seem to be a little harder to give more colour and some
of them are lighter to give less effect and so the colour looks softer. The
picture gives us an illusion of the sun being on the left side as the colours
on the left side are much lighter and the face is practically white so it shows
that that side of the face must be in the sun. The colours do not resemble the
actual subject as it is a person. On the right side of the face the colours
used are cold such as blue & purple however on the left side of the face
which has to be lighter the colours used are warm such as yellow red &
pink. The tonal range of this art work is from light to dark some areas are
dark some are light. The texture seems to be smooth however the dark colours
that are used seemed to be a little rough as it is rich with colour. The
subject is viewed from the eye level।

OPINION
In my opinion her work is great. I
like the idea of the using only colour pencils without actually using a normal
pencil to make an outline. It gave good practice to me as I tried to make one
of the images in her style to make my own as I couldn’t use a pencil at all. I
think her style of work from using loads of different colour pencils creates a
really positive mood and is really good. Agnes is one of the artists I would
look up to.
