Mont Sainte-Victoire Print by Paul Cezanne

Subject
matter: The painting name is: Mont Sainte-Victoire seen from
Bellevue. It was painted in 1885. The art work seems to be a little boring as
the colors are the same, but at the same time that’s what makes it interesting.
This is a painting of some kind of town with mountains in the background. A lot
of his work has something to do with nature like mountains, forests, farm
houses, trees.

Technique: This work was painted with oil paint.
It was painted on a canvas. I think the marks were quite carefully applied as
the colours seem to be chosen and applied perfectly. The paint consistency is
medium and oily as the paint was oil although it’s not too thick not too thin. There
is a lot of depth in the work as we can clearly see that the mountains are in
the back of the whole painting and the trees are in the front, the sizes of
them tells us that the painting itself is not flat. The colours do resemble the
actual object as it’s all about nature and the painting is mainly green and
yellow just different shades of these 2 colours. I think this painting is
unique because of the use of colours. The colours used are cold and worm as
shades of green are cold and shades of yellow, orange are warm. There is a lot of tonal range in the work as
there is a lot of shading and you can see there are dark areas and light areas.
The texture could be rough just because of the canvas however the paint is
smooth, so the only thing that makes it rough is the canvas itself. The
landscape is viewed from eye level although it looks like the painter was in
the plane while he was painting cause it looks from high up but eye level.

Artist’s career: Paul Cezanne is a French painter and was
born in Aix-en-Provence, France in January 19th
1839. He died aged 67 in the same place in France 22nd October 1906.
The movement he was working in was Post-impressionism. He influenced these
artists: Georges Braque, Henri Matisse, Pablo
Picasso and Bohumír Dvorský. Paul Cezanne was influenced by Camille Pissarro, Eugene
Delacroix and Camille Pissarro.

Evaluation Mural Project

The project
‘Snowboard designs’ was pretty clear at first until we had to start doing
stuff. The difficult part of this part of the project was actually organising
everything, trying to find mark making pieces that we done in the first few
weeks. It was hard to understand why we would need to do certain tasks but once
we got teachers explanation it was a little more clear. There was a range of
different tasks and activities we had to do to so keeping up with the work was
hard especially if we missed one or two lessons and every lesson was a
completely different task so I tried to stay as organised as I can to make sure
I get everything I need in my book. My first thought when I got the assignment
brief was that it was quite a fun project as we had to make snowboard designs.

I collected my information from study space
documents, also internet to do for the research of artists and some annotations
of my work. The form of research was notes and sketches as well as drawings and
paintings. Some information was hard to find such as research on Keith Haring
as most of the websites were blocked because of some of his offensive
paintings.
I
was quite satisfied with the 20 snowboard designs I came up from mark making
and magazines. 16 of them snowboard designs were from John’s class where we had
to use paint and make different marks. The other 4 were cut outs from different
magazines. I think I could have improved by doing a few more different designs
of snowboard for example using sketching pencils or colouring pencils।

I did not
choose a final design as I did so many of small templates. But it was not
because I did not have time but because there was templates that were a
different range in colour and even texture. The materials I used throughout the
project were scalpel for my cityscape, scissors, pencils, colouring pencils, acrylic
paint, sketching pencils, ruler, chalk, crayons, brushes and some other
materials but these were the main ones. New techniques to me were using a
scalpel as I didn’t do any work with it before; also doing mono-prints was new
to me too. There weren’t any major technical problems in this project, but I
can say that my annotations and some of the artist copies weren’t done to a
brilliant standard. The annotations were done my using annotation sheet but
they weren’t really presentable as I kind of rushed it. If I had extra time, I
would add annotations nicely; I would add proper titles to every page as well
as make all the pictures and experiments good in shape.

I did quite
enjoy the assignment but It was hard being so organised and getting everything
in the book the way it had to be. I did complete all the work on time but I
pretty much rushed my annotations for everything. I would improve a lot and I
would definitely copy more artists’ works as I had only 3.

Evaluation Snowboard design

I was pretty
clear of the task that I have been given. At first I didn’t really like the
final idea that I made before I started to do the board, however when I marked
it out with a pencil and started painting it I got kind of into it and I pretty
much liked it throughout. My first thoughts when I got the assignment brief
that it is going to be a fun activity however not without any difficulties. I
was thinking some areas of the project are going to be hard, but I kept myself
thinking positive and I tried my hardest to achieve every annotation, copy of
artist work and of course the final mural board really well.

I collected
my information for the research on internet. I used loads of different web
sites and after I read quite a lot, I wrote it from my head without copying
anything. The research form was notes and some sketches. One of my researches
about artist called Si Scott inspired me a lot because I love his work. All the
twirls and working with a fine liner really worked well for me. Another artist
that I got some ideas in my final piece was from street artist called STIK. He
is a street artist from London. His work is amazing and I used some of his
stick people in my mural painting. I wasn’t exactly satisfied with my ideas
because I had to figure out how it links to me as the project is about ‘Who am
I, Where am I going’, but after a little while I added some more ideas and it
turned out well although if I spent even more time on it, it would turn have
turned out much better. My book was quite organised as I numbered my pages and
I put the stuff in order from the way it was meant to be. Also annotated mostly
everything to make sure that when the teacher looks at my book he would know
what I did.

If I had more time I think I would improve it
quite a lot. I would add tonal range to most of the objects; I would also add
more stuff about myself. Maybe would add more twirls to elongate the letter ‘E’
I was given. I used materials such as
acrylic paint, sketching pencil, HB pencil, poster paint, markers, ruler,
paintbrushes and palettes. I had some problems with painting in small details
as I had to be quite precise and as the brush was quite thick using acrylic
paint was a little hard. I tried my hardest to make it look good and at a good
quality. Also making the base colour the same as the person next to me was a
little difficult because we had to make it join together. In this project I
enjoyed copying artists work such as Si Scott, Kara walker. I also enjoyed
trying to make my own ideas connecting with different artists, and painting the
board was pretty good too once I finished marking it out with a pencil. I
didn’t have to rush on my painting because I came in early on some days to make
sure I finish it before the deadline but time ran out before I knew it, so it
wasn’t as good as it could have been if there was a little more time.

Giorgio de Chirico

Subject matter: This painting by Giorgio de Chirico
is called ‘The song of love’. It was painted in 1914 and was done in a
surrealist type. This is one of the most famous works of Giorgio. The moods are
quite calm as the colours aren’t extremely bright or eye catching. I think the
subject matter of the work itself I think is about the colour and composition
of objects in the painting.

Techniques: This art work is painted. The marks
on some parts of the work are really careful, to get the marks and the
proportions of every object right. The detail is very good in my opinion. The paint
that was used was oil paint and was painted on a canvas. The consistency of the
paint I think is different so it ranges from medium to thick. There is a lot of
depth in the work although we know the head sculpture is probably bigger than
the glove, the way its done makes us seem like it is the same size. There are
some things in the background which shows us that the glove is closer to us.
The colours used are some warm like orange and some cool like turquoise and
green. There is a lot of tonal range in this art work as we can see every shade
of the glove, or the sculpture head. The colours are quite dull in my opinion
it makes the work seem like the painting is really old. The texture seems to be smooth as there was only
oil paint used. The composition was very important to the artist as he wanted
to make the objects go just the way he wanted them to.

Artist’s career: Giorgio de Chirico was born in Greece,
Volos on 10th July,
1888. He was an Italian painter who was working in surrealism and scuola
metafisica. He went to Academy of Fine arts in Germany. He died in Rome, Italy on 20th November 1978 and was aged
90 when he died. (1888-07-10)

Keith Haring

Subject matter: The subject matter of Keith’s work is meant to be about different aspects of life such as death, religion, aids and social issues. At first I didn’t think there was a subject matter for his work until I saw that there is. The colours are really bright so it makes us feel happy and joyful although it has a deeper meaning that happiness.

Technique: this art piece was painted as most of Keith’s at work. It was painted quite carefully and it has a thick black line around the silhouette to make the colours stand out even more as well as to contrast with the background. The paint seems to be really thick. There is no tonal range in the work or depth as the silhouettes are not overlapping or aren’t significantly bigger than the other figures. The art work is flat so the texture must be smooth. Colours used are both warm and cold.

Artists career: Keith Haring was born in Reading, Pennsylvania on May the 4th in 1958 and died at the age of 31 in New York city in New York on February 16th 1990. His death was caused by aids related complications. He was interested in art from a very early age. He studied graphic design, fine art and then graffiti art in New York city.

Opinion: I like his work of course it was first hard to figure out the meaning behind every print/painting but once I found out it made sense and I really liked it. I think he has his own style and it works really well for him.

Murakami Takashi

Subject matter: The mood that this image creates is really funky and fun. The use of extremely bright flat colours makes the image seem cheerful. I don’t think this has some sort of message behind I think it’s just his passion for cartoon like characters which he turns into amazing art work. The subject matter of the art work itself is all about colour I think, and also about the cartoon characters.

Technique: This art work was painted with extremely bright and different colours. Every object is outlined thinly in black. I think that’s really needed to separate the colours as there is so much going on with this picture especially with all the flowers behind the two anime like characters. Murakami Takashi did not use any tonal range so the image looks really flat. But it works this way as its 2 dimensional. Although the colours are flat there is some depth in the image such as because of the small flowers in the background, the two characters are in the front which makes us clearly see that the characters are closer. Some flowers in the background are overlapping each other which once again implies that some of them are smaller some are bigger. In this art piece there are cold colours such as green and blue but also warm colours such as pink, red and yellow. All the colours however seem to be really bright and light. The paint that was used is probably thin because the colours look really flat so the texture is smooth. The subject is at the eye level.

Artist career: Murakami Takashi was born in Tokyo in 1962. From an early age Murakami was really interested in manga and anime and had a dream of working in anime industry one day. He went to Tokyo University of fine arts hoping to get skills to become an animator although he found something that he liked which was a traditional style of painting. He works in fine arts media.

Opinion: I really like his work. I think it brings joy and it’s hard to think negative of such artwork. The bright colours and different range of them really works well in my opinion. I chose to talk about this artist because his work inspires me although my dream isn’t to be an animator I really like what he does and the flat colours that he used to paint this.

Andy Warhol

SUBJECT MATTER
The subject matter of the work itself I think is just
showing different techniques used in one piece of work and making them look
simple but at the same time professional and interesting. Andy Warhol has its
own style. The colours are flat and dull is kind of boring so the mood that the
work creates isn’t excitement or happiness, it is very simple or too simple
that’s why the mood isn’t so positive. The ideas and thoughts this piece of
artwork gives is that this is about clothes and has something to do with
fashion.

TECHNIQUE
The techniques that are used in this picture are pencil, paint and ink. First the
Andy used pencil to make an outline of the whole image, then he used
watercolour paint to fill in the colour and once the paint was dry he used ink
pen to go around all the lines. The watercolour was used carefully and was
blended throughout the clothes. The consistency of the paint was thin as it was
used a little of paint and water to give a flat and not rich colour. There is
not much depth in the picture however we can see a little areas of dark and
light for example on the dress. The colours resemble the actual subject which
was mainly clothes. Cold colours are used such as blue and green. There isn’t
any bright areas that would be eye catching. The texture is smooth and flat as
it was mainly water used.

ARTIST’s CAREER
Andrew Warhola also known as Andy Warhol was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, US on
the 6th of August 1928. He died age 58 in New York 22nd
February, 1987. Andy was a fourth child in the family and he showed his first
talents when he went to Carnegie Institute of Technology where
he studied commercial art. His fashion and clothing works are when he was quite
young, later in life he did other things such as filmography, music and
paintings. Andy Warhol was popular and he sold one of his works for $ 100
million dollars in 2009 and this was one of the highest prices paid for an art
work.

OPINION
I think his art work that I liked the most was the one I
studied which done by using watercolor, ink and pencil. I think it’s because
when I done one of my images in his style I really liked it and although it did
look quite simple and flat it was still really good. (1987-02-22)

Agnes Decourchelle

SUBJECT MATTER

Agnes Decourchelle uses colour pencils to show different shadings in the
drawing. The mood that the picture gives is quite positive as the image is
colourful It does not give negative thoughts. The subject matter of this is the
use of colour and the different colours used to contrast.

TECHNIQUE
This artwork
is coloured with pencils. The pencils used were colour pencils and some of the
strokes on the art work seem to be a little harder to give more colour and some
of them are lighter to give less effect and so the colour looks softer. The
picture gives us an illusion of the sun being on the left side as the colours
on the left side are much lighter and the face is practically white so it shows
that that side of the face must be in the sun. The colours do not resemble the
actual subject as it is a person. On the right side of the face the colours
used are cold such as blue & purple however on the left side of the face
which has to be lighter the colours used are warm such as yellow red &
pink. The tonal range of this art work is from light to dark some areas are
dark some are light. The texture seems to be smooth however the dark colours
that are used seemed to be a little rough as it is rich with colour. The
subject is viewed from the eye level।

OPINION
In my opinion her work is great. I
like the idea of the using only colour pencils without actually using a normal
pencil to make an outline. It gave good practice to me as I tried to make one
of the images in her style to make my own as I couldn’t use a pencil at all. I
think her style of work from using loads of different colour pencils creates a
really positive mood and is really good. Agnes is one of the artists I would
look up to.
